We purchased a mid-century modernist house in a Highgate conservation zone. Designed by Leonard Michaels in the early 1960s, it was a fine example of its genre but required a radical overhaul. The property was in poor condition, had been subdivided, and sublet. It consisted of two unconnected units with no internal connection between them. Additionally, the project faced significant internal construction challenges that only became apparent once work began.

Our goal was to preserve the building’s modernist heritage while addressing its defects. We needed a knowledgeable and experienced firm to guide us through this complex and challenging process.We chose Chris Dyson Architects based on their extensive record in modernizing period homes while respecting original architecture.

The team assisted with every detail, from addressing major structural issues to selecting period-appropriate finishes like door handles and light switches. The refurbishment involved stripping the building to its core to remediate original construction flaws while adding elements that enhanced the architectural vision. CDA was invaluable at every stage, recommending materials and subcontractors while expertly managing the builders and other professionals.
